How Long Should You Brush 360 Waves? The Truth About 10, 30, and 60-Minute Sessions

If you’re trying to get 360 waves, one of the most common questions beginners ask is:
“How long should I brush my waves?”
Some people say 10 minutes. Others say an hour. Some elite wavers brush for several hours every day.
So what’s the truth?
The answer depends on your stage, hair length, and how serious you are about improving your waves.
After 15 years of waving, I’ve learned that brushing isn’t about reaching some magic number. It’s about consistency.
Waves are laid down curls. Brushing trains those curls to lay down in a pattern. The more consistently you train your hair, the better your waves become.
If you want to see exactly how I start my day and maintain my waves, watch my morning routine below.
Is 10 Minutes Enough?
Ten minutes is better than nothing, but it’s usually not enough if you’re trying to build deep, defined waves.
Think of brushing like the gym.
Doing one set of pushups won’t transform your body overnight. But putting in consistent work every day will.
The same applies to waves.
Ten-minute brush sessions can help maintain your pattern, but if you’re trying to improve connections, deepen your waves, or fix weak areas, you’ll need more brushing.
Consistency is key.
How Long Should Beginners Brush Their Waves?
If you’re just starting your wave journey, I recommend brushing for at least 30 minutes to an hour every day.
Split your sessions up if necessary.
For example:
Morning Session
15-20 minutes
Afternoon Session
15-20 minutes
Night Session
15-20 minutes
Breaking your brush sessions up throughout the day makes it easier to stay consistent.
The goal isn’t to brush for one hour straight.
The goal is to put quality time into your waves every day.

How Long Should Advanced Wavers Brush?
Once your pattern is established, you can focus on maintaining and improving your connections.
Most experienced wavers brush anywhere from one to two hours per day.
Some elite wavers brush even longer, especially during wolfing.
Remember:
You get out what you put in. The more you train your 360 waves to lay down, the tighter your connections will become.
Pro Tip:
I found that I need at least 1 hour of focused brushing a day. Im usually wolfing, so if I'm not consistently brushing my waves, my hair will start to curl up. I train my 360 waves to lay down throughout the day by brushing whenever I get the chance: In my car, when I'm at a friends house, or if I'm watching TV.

Should You Brush More While Wolfing?
Absolutely.
Wolfing requires more maintenance because your hair becomes thicker and harder to control.
Longer hair means:
- More opportunities for deeper waves as your hair gets curlier.
- Better connections through continuous training.
- Greater crown development as the hair in the crown gets thicker.
But it also means:
- More frizz.
- More overcurling.
- More maintenance.
During wolf sessions, I recommend brushing for at least one to two hours throughout the day.
As your hair gets longer, a medium or hard brush becomes necessary to reach the scalp and train the new growth.
Finish with a soft brush to smooth everything down before compressing.

Does More Brushing Mean Better Waves?
Yes and no.
More brushing generally leads to better waves, but only if you’re using proper technique.
Mindlessly brushing your hair for three hours won’t help if you’re brushing in the wrong direction.
Correct angles matter.
Consistency matters.
Compression matters.
Moisture matters.
Brushing is the foundation, but everything works together.
I feel our waves can hit a plateau for the day. Waves are laid down curls, meaning we need to use a brush to lay down our curls. If we have no new hair growth, theres no new hair to train. Thats why I believe we only need to brush for a few hours a day. Anything after that is pointless.
Can You Overbrush Your Waves?
Many beginners worry about overbrushing.
The truth is, it’s hard to overbrush healthy, moisturized hair.
Most people don’t overbrush.
They underbrush.
However, brushing dry, brittle hair aggressively can cause breakage and irritation.
Always keep your hair moisturized.
Healthy hair waves better.
My hair is much easier to manipulate with the brush when it's moisturized. Adding a light oil to my waves before my brush session allows my waves to absorb the nutrients from the oil, making my brush sessions much easier.

My Personal Brushing Routine
After years of waving, I’ve found that consistency beats marathon sessions.
My routine usually looks like this:
Morning
10 minute brush session. I mainly focus on my crown, as the hair in the crown is the hardest to wave up. Starting with that sets the tone.
Apply moisturizer if needed.
Compress with a durag.
Afternoon
20-30 minute brush session.
Focus on weak areas and connections.
If I'm unable to brush in the mirror, I'll brush my hair throughout the day; mostly focusing on my edges and the centre area of my waves. Im unable to see my crown, so to avoid brushing incorrectly, I focus on the parts that don't need as much precision.
Night
30-45 minute brush session.
This is my biggest session. After a long day, I finish my brush session by brushing in the shower. It removes all the dirt and build up acquired throughout the day, and it's much easier to brush wet hair than dry.
Apply wave cream or oil if needed.
Finish with a soft brush and compress overnight.
This routine keeps my waves laid and allows me to continue making progress.
Greatness takes time.

Common Brushing Mistakes
Not Brushing Enough
Most beginners underestimate how much brushing waves require.
Remember:
Waves are laid down curls.
Brushing creates the pattern. Brushing more lays everything down. It all starts with brushing your waves.
Brushing Too Fast
Slow, controlled strokes are much more effective than rushing through your session.
Ignoring Weak Areas
Spend extra time on your crown, sides, and any areas with forks. It may feel awkward brushing your weak spots. That's because you don't brush it enough, and haven't learned the muscle memory yet.
Not Wearing a Durag
A brush session without compression is like playing a video game and not saving your game.
A durag saves your progress.
Brushing Dry Hair
Dry hair becomes brittle and difficult to manage.
Moisturized hair is easier to train. Add a light oil to your hair before your brush session to soften your waves.
Final Thoughts
There isn’t a perfect number when it comes to brushing.
Some days you may only have 20 minutes.
Other days you might brush for two hours.
What matters most is consistency.
The wavers with the best results aren’t always the people brushing the longest.
They’re the people who stay disciplined and trust the process.
Products don’t give you waves.
Brushing does.
Stay patient.
Stay consistent.
Your waves will thank you.
