How To Have A Proper 360 Wave Brush Session

A proper brush session is one of the most important parts of getting better 360 waves. Products can help, durags can help, and wolfing can help, but the real progress comes from consistently brushing your hair the right way every day.
Whether you are a beginner waver or someone who has been brushing for years, your brush session should have structure. You want to use the right brush, hit the correct angles, focus on your weak areas, and finish by laying your hair down with a durag.
Following along with me in a full brush session while I'm traveling in Langkawi, Malaysia, using the Alaska Ice Medium Brush and Inferno Soft Brush.

Why Brush Sessions Matter
360 waves are created through repetition. The more consistently you brush your hair in the correct direction, the more your hair begins to lay into a defined pattern.
A good brush session helps you:
- Train your wave pattern
- Improve connection
- Lay down frizz
- Work on weak sides
- Break down forks
- Keep your hair laid while wolfing
The key is not just brushing randomly. You need to brush with consistency. Consistent strokes will develop your pattern faster than just random brushing.

Start With A Medium Brush
For most brush sessions, it is best to start with a medium brush. A medium brush gives you enough pull to reach deeper into your hair without being too aggressive on your scalp.
In the video, I started my brush session with the Alaska Ice Medium Brush because my hair is longer and I'm currently wolfing. The medium brush helps move the hair, train the pattern, and get a stronger pull than a soft brush.
A medium brush is great for:
- Daily brush sessions
- Wolfing when your hair is longer
- Training your pattern to lay down a specific way
- Improving connections
- Brushing through thicker hair
- Building better wave definition
If your hair is not freshly cut and has some length, a medium brush should usually be one of the main brushes in your routine.

Focus On Your Angles
Your angles are everything when it comes to 360 waves. Every waver has a specific pattern, and your job is to brush your hair in the same direction consistently.
If you brush different angles every session, your waves can become confused. This can lead to forks, weak connections, and uneven progress.
During your brush session, focus on brushing each section of your head with the correct angle:
Top: brush forward toward your forehead.
Sides: brush down and slightly forward or sideways depending on your pattern.
Back: brush downward toward the neckline.
Crown: brush carefully around the natural direction of your crown.
The more consistent your angles are, the better your waves will become over time.

Work On Your Weak Side
Every waver has a weak side. For some people, it is the left side. For others, it is the right side, the back, or the crown area.
In the video, I explain how my right side is currently my weak side, especially near the crown. This is normal. Your weak side can change over time depending on how much attention you give each area. Once I focus more on the weak side, and develop the waves there, another area might become my weak spot due to neglect. It's a never ending cycle of trying to get perfect 360 waves.
The best way to improve a weak side is to spend more focused time brushing that section. Do not rush through it. Slow down, use the mirror, and make sure you are hitting the correct angle.
Your weak side improves when you give it more reps.

Switch To A Soft Brush To Lay Everything Down
After using a medium brush, it is smart to finish with a soft brush. A soft brush does not give as much deep pull, but it is perfect for laying down the top layer of your hair.
In the video, after brushing with the medium wave brush, I switch to the Inferno Soft Wave Brush to smooth everything out, brush the edges, and lay down the surface of my waves.
A soft brush is great for:
- Finishing a brush session
- Laying down frizzy hair
- Brushing fresh cuts
- Brushing sensitive areas
- Working on edges
- Public brushing to keep your waves laid
- Adding shine to your waves
Sometimes you do not need to press hard. You just need to let the bristles do the work.

Do Not Ignore Your Edges
Your edges are an important part of your wave pattern. A lot of wavers focus on the top and sides but forget to brush all the way down to the hairline.
When using a soft brush, brush gently toward your edges and make sure you are following your natural pattern. This can help clean up forks and improve the way your waves connect near the front and sides.
The more wave you have, the better your pattern becomes. Neglecting your edges eliminates an entire row of waves being developed. You want your waves to crash to the shore; not stop half-way.
The key is to be consistent without irritating your skin.

Rag Up After Your Brush Session
Once your brush session is complete, you should put on a durag to lock in the progress.
Brushing trains the hair, but the durag helps lay it down and keep it compressed. Without compression, your hair can frizz back up after brushing.
For the best results, use a quality durag with good compression and comfortable strings. In the video, I used the Wavy Merch TrueSilk Durag, which is designed with longer strings, better material, and a thicker feel for better hold.
Surprisingly, these durags don't move while I sleep. The compression is comfortably tight, meaning I wake up with my durag on, waves laid, and no headaches or lines on my forehead.
After brushing, ragging up helps:
- Lock your waves in place
- Reduce frizz by compressing your hair
- Protect your progress from getting messy
- Keep your hair laid down longer
How Long Should A Brush Session Be?
A good brush session can be anywhere from 15 to 30 minutes, depending on your hair length, goals, and schedule.
If you are wolfing, you may need longer sessions because your hair is thicker and requires more work. If you just got a fresh cut, a shorter session with a soft or medium brush may be enough.
The most important thing is consistency. A 15-minute focused brush session every day is better than one random long session once in a while.
My brush sessions usually last an hour, and they get longer deepening on how long my hair is. If I'm wolfing, it may take a bit longer for me to lay my waves down, but if I have a fresh cut, managing my waves is much easier.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is a 360 wave brush session?
A 360 wave brush session is a focused brushing routine used to train your hair to lay in a wave pattern. During a brush session, you brush your hair in the correct angles, work on weak areas, improve connections, and finish by laying your hair down with a durag.
How long should a 360 wave brush session be?
A good 360 wave brush session can be anywhere from 15 to 30 minutes. If you are wolfing or have thicker hair, you may need longer sessions. If you just got a fresh cut, a shorter session with a soft or medium brush may be enough.
Should I use a medium brush or soft brush for 360 waves?
Both brushes are important. A medium brush is best for getting deeper pull, training your pattern, and brushing through longer hair. A soft brush is best for laying down the top layer, smoothing frizz, brushing edges, and finishing your session.
When should I use a medium brush?
You should use a medium brush when your hair has some length and you need more pull. Medium brushes are great for daily brush sessions, wolfing, improving connections, and training your wave pattern.
When should I use a soft brush?
You should use a soft brush when you want to lay your hair down, brush a fresh cut, smooth the top layer, or focus on your edges. Soft brushes are also great for finishing a brush session after using a medium or hard brush.
Why should I finish my brush session with a soft brush?
Finishing with a soft brush helps lay down the surface of your hair, reduce frizz, and polish your waves. After using a medium brush for pull, the soft brush helps smooth everything out before you put on your durag.
Do I need to wear a durag after brushing?
Yes. Wearing a durag after brushing helps lock your waves in place, keep your hair laid down, reduce frizz, and maintain compression. Brushing trains the hair, but the durag helps hold the progress.
How do I fix my weak side?
To fix your weak side, spend extra time brushing that area with the correct angle. Use a mirror, slow down, and stay consistent. Weak sides improve over time when you give them more focused attention during your brush sessions.
Can I brush my waves every day?
Yes. Daily brushing is one of the best ways to improve your 360 waves. Consistency is key. Even if you only have time for a short session, brushing every day helps train your hair and improve your pattern over time.
What products were used in the video?
